PASSIONATE ABOUT
THEIR CRAFT
Hogin Sails has been a fixture of the island for many years, formerly at Alameda Marina, now by Bay Ship - one of those maritime companies that is part of the soul of this town. Steve and Nick are passionate about their craft and put more mindshare into each sail than most anyone else I know.
I only buy racing sails, but a good half of their business is building (and servicing) cruising sails, given the sizable market in Alameda alone. They do great work.

THE SAILS
HAVE BEEN GREAT
Steve built a new main in 08 and new 90% jib in 06 to my Master Mariner Spaulding 38. At the time I was crew - now the owner - but I remember the efforts he made to correct a couple of shortcomings on the main the day before the Memorial day race. The sails have been great, look good and we'll soon see on the race course.
The reason I writing this review is he spent quite a bit of time with me on the phone today looking up measurements of these sails to assist me in completing the YRA handicap form. It was a really great help - thanks Steve!

FIVE STARS!
I bought a furling jib and main from Hogin in 2006. Within a year, I had a few small problems, such as a torn batten pocket...I took the sail in and they repaired it for free. I'm a heavy-duty sailor with lots of weekend afternoons in the slot, so my sails take a beating. Now, this week, I took my jib in for a large 6-foot tear of the furling cover, a few broken slugs on the main and another torn batten pocket. For a reasonable price, they fixed everything like new - AND GET THIS - even came in on a Saturday morning so that I could pick up the sails for a weekend outing, even though they're closed on weekends. FIVE STARS for customer service, friendliness and service on their sails.

THE WORK QUALITY
WAS GREAT
This review is nearly a year overdue - as we collected our repaired (and improved) jib from Hogin back in 2020. The original Hood sail was coming apart at the stitching which is exposed to the sun when furled. There were several other minor repairs as well. Another sail-loft tried to persuade us to buy a new sail at about 3x the cost of the repair done at Hogin. Bottom line, the work quality was great, our repaired sail with it's new forest green UV cover adds to the boat's style and has performed very well over the first full year. Although not engaged in racing, we note that our boat holds it's own with larger sloops and normally out performs boats of similar size - and the jib's performance is a huge part of that. Happy to say we should have 5+ years left for this headsail and we'd go back to Hogin first for any other sail repair or replacement.

THE WORKMANSHIP
IS EXCELLENT
I have purchased a new main sail, new 90-headsail, mainsail cover and had 3 sails modified for use in a roller furler (purchased in that order, btw). I feel that Steve and his crew of sail-makers stand behind their work and the workmanship thus far has been excellent. You get to work directly with "the'
guy who is making your sail and you get that one-on-one customer service which, to me, is worth the little bit more money.

GOOD
CUSTOMER RELATIONS
Good service...Steve was helpful and accommodating...my job was getting a sail repaired only but I would definitely consider purchasing new sails later on when the time comes...good work and good customer relations.

HELPFUL, KNOWLEDGEABLE, AND SKILLED
Hogin Sails is definitely worth going out of your way for! Steve is helpful, knowledgeable, and skilled at sail repair and making. And, he remembered me, even with me wearing a mask, and his not having seen me for over a year!
I visited Hogin Sails for the first time as a J-World instructor this week. Steve was right there helping me out with product I couldn't find elsewhere (excluding online). And he remembered me and my boat from my pre- J-World days.
I highly recommend Hogin Sails for quality value and service that goes above and beyond anything that can be bought at any price.

THEY WERE VERY ACCOMMODATING
I live out of state in an area without a many sailmakers. I needed to have the UV cover replaced on my roller furling jib, so I sent it to Hogin Sails. Kat and Steve were great to work with, and very accommodating of the hassles of dealing with shipping the sail back to me. Their work was good, communication professional and timely, prices fair, and their turnaround time was very reasonable. I won't hesitate to work with them in the future.
